Stone thermal baths carved into an Alpine hillside. Zumthor's masterwork of material, light, and water — one of the most sensory architectural experiences in existence.
Built in 1996 over the thermal springs of Vals in the Graubünden Alps, Peter Zumthor's baths are cut into the hillside of the neighbouring hotel and built from about 60,000 slabs of local Valser quartzite laid in thin layers. The plan is a sequence of stone blocks and gaps: pools of different temperatures, dark grottoes and a large outdoor bath open to the valley, lit by narrow slits in the grass-covered roof. It is one of the most influential buildings of its generation for its handling of material, light and water.
