Piazza Navona follows the exact outline of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the 1st century AD, whose long oval plan still shapes the square. Its Baroque form came in the 17th century under Pope Innocent X: Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) stands at the centre, facing Francesco Borromini's church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, and two further fountains mark the ends. Lined with palazzi and cafés, it remains one of Rome's great public rooms.
