About this place
IDMM Architects' seaside café on the Gijang coast north of Busan: massive concrete volumes stacked and rotated to frame views of the East Sea, topped by a roof deck.
Waveon sits on the rocky Gijang shoreline north of Busan, and its design answers one question: how to give every table a view of the sea. Heesoo Kwak and IDMM Architects completed the café in late 2016.
The building is made of large concrete volumes, stacked and rotated against each other so that each opens toward the East Sea in a different direction. Between them, terraces and openings create a sequence of indoor and outdoor rooms at different levels, and a roof deck crowns the composition.
The raw concrete keeps the architecture quiet against the water, while the shifting angles make the views change as you climb through the building.
It is busy at weekends; arrive early in the day for the calmest sea views.
