Stephan Braunfels' Pinakothek der Moderne opened in 2002 in Munich's museum quarter and brings four museums — modern art, architecture, design and works on paper — under one roof. A great central rotunda under a glass dome acts as the building's crossing, from which long, top-lit galleries and a monumental stair lead in all directions.
