About this place
A serene campus of white-rendered buildings for a century-old charity, housing a nursery, elderly and homeless shelters, and a chapel around shared courtyards.
The Padre Rubinos Social Charity Institution has served A Coruña's most vulnerable residents for nearly a hundred years. In 2014, Elsa Urquijo Arquitectos completed a new 16,000-square-metre campus that reimagines what a charitable institution's architecture can be: not institutional and grey, but calm, dignified, and quietly beautiful.
The complex is organized as a cluster of low, white-rendered volumes arranged around courtyards and gardens, each block dedicated to a different function — a nursery school, sheltered housing for the elderly, an emergency shelter for the homeless, and a small chapel marked by a slender bell tower. The white render, deep-set openings, and restrained material palette recall the vernacular whitewashed architecture of Galicia and the Mediterranean, giving the complex a monastic, almost timeless quality despite its contemporary construction.
What distinguishes the project is its deliberate mixing of generations and needs — children, elderly residents, and homeless guests share adjacent, sunlit courtyards rather than being segregated into isolated wings. Light wells, cloistered walkways, and carefully framed views of sky and garden recur throughout, treating dignity and daily comfort as design priorities rather than afterthoughts. The result has been widely published not for spectacle but for demonstrating that social architecture, done with care, can be genuinely serene.
