Liebling House

About this place

The Liebling House—also known as the Max Liebling House—was commissioned in 1936 by Tony and Max Liebling and designed by architect Dov Karmi with engineer Tzvi Barak. Located at 29 Idelson Street in Tel Aviv-Yafo, the building is widely recognized as an International Style/Bauhaus-inflected work within the city’s famed modernist “White City” fabric. ([en.wikipedia.org](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Liebling_House?utm_source=openai)) As originally conceived, it functioned as a multi-family residential building, but its architectural language was tuned to Tel Aviv’s climate and daily life. This is part of what makes it instructive in the history of Israeli modernism: it demonstrates how a European modernist vocabulary could be adapted to local light, ventilation, and urban conditions rather than copied mechanically. Since the late 2010s, the building has operated as Liebling Haus – The White City Center, a culture institution associated with research and education around architectural and urban conservation (Bauhaus/modernist heritage). In that role, the house turns from a private domestic artifact into a public reference point—an architectural “document” you can study in place, rather than only view from outside.
