About this place
SO-IL's K3 gallery for Kukje — a chain-link mesh envelope wrapping an existing granite building in Samcheong-dong, creating a shimmering intermediate skin that redefines the boundary between inside and out.
Kukje Gallery's K3 building is one of the most distinctively resolved small architectural interventions in Seoul and one of SO-IL's most discussed works internationally. The project involved wrapping an existing 1980s granite building in a new chain-link stainless steel mesh envelope that creates a secondary enclosure around the original structure, with a gap between the two skins large enough to circulate through.
The mesh is structural and detailed as a precise object — stainless steel links of a specific gauge, pulled to a specific tension, attached to a custom frame — but its effect is atmospheric: it reads as a shimmering cloud or veil depending on the light, reflecting sky and trees, and shifting from opaque to semi-transparent as the viewing angle changes. At night, light from inside the galleries bleeds through both skins simultaneously, making the building glow from within.
The gallery itself is straightforward — clean white walls, good natural and artificial light, the standard conditions of a professional exhibition space. What SO-IL contributed was a rethinking of the building's relationship to the street and the surrounding Samcheong-dong environment. The intermediate space between mesh and stone creates a threshold condition that is neither fully inside nor fully outside — a semi-public space that draws pedestrians in, makes the building inhabitable at the surface, and creates a soft edge between the gallery and the busy gallery district around it.
K3 is located immediately adjacent to the main Kukje Gallery building on Samcheong-ro; visit both on the same trip.
