About this place
Libeskind's zinc-clad building of voids and axes makes the experience of history physical. Architecture that argues, not decorates.
Daniel Libeskind's extension to the Jewish Museum Berlin opened in 2001 and is entered only underground from the Baroque Kollegienhaus next door. Its zinc-clad zigzag plan is cut by slashed windows and crossed by 'voids' — empty concrete shafts that cannot be entered — representing absence. Three underground axes lead to the Holocaust Tower, the Garden of Exile with its tilted concrete stelae, and the stair to the permanent exhibition.
