Tadao Ando's Chichu Art Museum (2004) on Naoshima is buried almost entirely in a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea to protect the landscape. Built for just three artists — Claude Monet, Walter De Maria and James Turrell — its concrete galleries are lit only by daylight through openings in the ground, so the works change with the weather and time of day. Visitors move through open courts and ramps between the rooms.
