About this place
Built by local farmers around a burned log structure. The charred interior and single oculus overhead create something between a cave and a telescope. A pilgrimage worth making.
Peter Zumthor's small chapel in a field near Mechernich (2007) was built by local farmers. A tepee of 112 tree trunks was used as formwork for rammed concrete poured in layers, then burned out, leaving a charred, ribbed interior open to the sky through an oculus and lit by glass stoppers set in the tie holes. From outside it reads as a tall, silent block of layered concrete.
