About this place
The former Ministry of Highways (1975) by George Chakhava and Zurab Jalaghania — interlocking horizontal concrete blocks stacked around cores above a ravine, a key work of Soviet-era structuralism, now the Bank of Georgia headquarters.
Designed by George Chakhava and Zurab Jalaghania and completed in 1975 as the Ministry of Highways of the Georgian SSR, the building stacks long horizontal concrete blocks in a criss-cross arrangement on a few vertical cores, leaving the ground below largely free on its steep site above a ravine. A defining work of Soviet-era structuralism, it has been the headquarters of the Bank of Georgia since 2007.
